Kia ora whānau,

It’s been a jam-packed month at Mosh, and an even busier month in the social media world! In this August newsletter, we’ll look at whether hashtags have become obsolete in 2024, some Instagram updates that could majorly impact the future of social media marketing, and we’ll highlight some Mosh success stories from the last month 🥳

Blog: Hashtags in 2024, Are They In or Out?

Is it time to say ‘goodbye’ to hashtags? 👋

Despite claims they’re as outdated as skinny jeans and flip phones, we’re here to set the record straight! Introduced back in 2007 (which feels like a lifetime ago 😅), a hashtag is basically a metadata tag that is prefaced by the # symbol. Commonly used as a form of user-generated tagging that enabled cross-referencing of content by topic or theme, do we still need them in today’s modern media landscape?

Instagram Goes Carousel Crazy!

Thanks to a new update, you can now upload up to a whopping 20 images in a carousel on Instagram – 20!!! This is double the standard 10 that we’re used to. We reckon this new update will have several positive implications for social media marketing on the platform, including:

🎠 Enhanced Storytelling: As a brand, you’ll now be able to tell more detailed stories, providing a more comprehensive view of your products, services, or events. This could be particularly useful for product launches, tutorials, or behind-the-scenes content 👀

🎠  Increased Interaction: With more content in a single post, users might spend more time engaging with the carousel. The ability to showcase a wider variety of content within one post could also attract more attention to your page.

🎠  Educational Content: Brands that use a lot of educational/informative content can now share more steps, tips, or details in a single carousel. This is ideal for tutorials, recipes or step-by-step guides! 📋

Go On, Tell Us A Story!

Once upon a time… Instagram decided to shake things up with a new feature: promoting Stories in between posts within the Home feed. This change means that instead of just seeing Stories at the top of the app in the dedicated Stories section, users will now encounter them as they scroll through their Home feed. This strategic placement provides Stories with an additional opportunity to capture attention and stand out even more.

But what does this mean for you? This increased visibility offers a fantastic chance to reach a broader audience. As users navigate through their Home feed, they’ll encounter Stories alongside regular posts, making it easier for them to engage with your content. With this double exposure, your Stories could attract more views and interactions, potentially leading to higher engagement rates in the long run!

By taking advantage of this new placement, you can craft engaging and visually appealing Stories that captivate users and drive them to interact. Whether you’re sharing behind-the-scenes content, promotions, or just your everyday moments, this feature can help ensure your Stories get the attention they deserve and make a memorable impact on your audience. We’ll be keeping an eye out to see if New Zealand users will be getting this update 👀
