Hello there,
We’re back 👋 Did you miss us? New year, new feeds, and yes… new resolutions.
As 2026 kicks off, we’re resetting the scroll and looking ahead at what actually matters on social media this year. We’ve pulled together our predictions for where platforms, creators, and content are heading next, not based on hype, but on patterns, signals, and what we’re seeing play out right now.
In this edition, we’re unpacking our 2026 predictions for where social is heading, from the role AI will actually play inside platforms, to why trust, creators, and human-led content are becoming more important than ever. Alongside that, we’re rounding up new tools, platform updates, and features worth knowing – the kind that quietly change how content is shared, discovered, and valued.
No crystal ball. No trend-chasing. Just what we’re paying attention to right now 👀
Let’s get into it.

Our 2026 Social Predictions
No crystal ball here, just a lot of pattern-spotting, platform watching, and listening closely to how people are actually using social. Based on what we’re seeing now, here are our predictions for where social media is heading in 2026, and what brands and creators should be paying attention to 👀
➡️ AI will be fully integrated into the apps, not the creators
AI will be baked into social platforms themselves, powering editing tools, recommendations, search, and insights. But creators won’t be replaced by it. The role of AI will be to support the process, not become the personality. The content that performs best will still be human-led, with AI quietly doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
➡️ Clear AI labelling and “human” verification will become normal
As AI content becomes harder to spot, platforms will need to step in. We’re expecting clearer AI labels, filters, and even verification-style signals for human-made content. Think proof-of-life moments, creator verification, or badges that help audiences understand what they’re seeing and who made it.
➡️ Creators become even more critical as trust filters
Instagram has already pointed out that as AI content increases, they rely more heavily on creators and influencers to anchor the platform in reality. As feeds fill with AI content, trusted creators will become the reference point for what feels real.
➡️ Micro and nano creators take the lead
We predict brands will continue shifting away from celebrity-style influence and toward smaller creators with genuine authority in niche communities. The question is no longer “who has the biggest following?” but “who does this audience actually trust?”
➡️ Social platforms become search engines, not just feeds
More users are already searching on TikTok and Instagram instead of Google, and we expect this to accelerate. Content will need to be discoverable, searchable, and genuinely useful. Captions, on-screen text, and spoken keywords will matter more than ever.
If all of this points to one thing, it’s this: social in 2026 is more human content, real relationships, and clear intent.

Test the Vibe Before You Commit With Trial Reels
Instagram has introduced Trial Reels and it’s giving big “try before you buy” energy. This new feature lets you share a Reel with non-followers first, so you can see how it performs before deciding whether to share it with your actual audience.
It’s a game changer for both creators and businesses. Creators can experiment with new formats, topics, or storytelling styles without stressing about confusing their followers. Businesses can test hooks, messaging, or creative concepts before backing them with paid spend.
How it works is refreshingly simple. Create your Reel as usual, toggle ‘Trial on’ before posting, then check performance after about 24 hours 👀 If it’s doing well, you can share it with everyone or even let Instagram automatically share it if the Reel performs strongly within the first few days.
Less pressure, more insight, and way better decisions ✨

What’s New on the Platforms?
Here are a few platform updates worth clocking that quietly change how content is shared and discovered.
- Instagram is cutting hashtag clutter
Instagram is testing a limit of just 5 hashtags per post. Translation: relevance over reach hacks. Strong captions, clear keywords, and content people actually engage with will matter more than ever.
- Public Instagram Stories can now travel further
Public Stories are rolling out across more countries and are now live in NZ. Anyone can reshare a public Story, even if they are not tagged, helping content move further with no extra effort. Great for visibility, and a good reminder to post with intention. Check if you have the update yet.
- TikTok is about to go local
TikTok’s Nearby Feed is rolling out in select European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, and Italy. It is not live in New Zealand yet, but it is coming. Location-based discovery will play a bigger role, especially for events, venues, and IRL-first creators.
- TikTok Bulletin Boards are rolling out
TikTok’s Bulletin Boards are being added for creators worldwide. If you’re 18+ and have 50,000 followers or more, it’s worth checking if you’ve got access. This feature gives creators a new way to speak directly to their audience with pinned updates that actually stick around. Think announcements, drops, reminders, and community touchpoints that live beyond Stories.
- Instagram scheduling is officially in-app
You can now schedule posts directly inside Instagram. No tools, no workarounds. Create your post, head to Advanced settings, set your time, and move on.

Trust is the Real Currency of 2026
There’s a bigger shift happening beyond new features. As AI content becomes more common and visuals become easier to fake, audiences are changing how they determine what is real.
Instead of trusting what they see, people are paying more attention to who is sharing the content and why. This is where creators matter more than ever. Real voices, real experiences, and showing up consistently are starting to carry more weight than perfectly polished feeds.
We’re also seeing aesthetics shift toward the human side of things. Content that feels a little raw, a little imperfect, and a lot more honest is becoming a signal of authenticity. It’s less about looking perfect and more about feeling credible.
➡️ For creators, this is a reminder that your reputation matters. Consistency, transparency, and staying true to your voice will take you further than chasing every trend. Trust built now sets you up for long-term relevance.
➡️ For brands, this shift is just as important. Creators are no longer just content producers. They are trusted messengers. The brands that win in 2026 will be the ones partnering with creators who genuinely align with their values and giving them the freedom to create in a way that feels natural to their audience.
The strongest partnerships moving forward will focus less on control and more on who is the best to collaborate with for your brand 💫

If there’s one takeaway from all of this, it’s that the future of social isn’t louder or more automated. It’s clearer, more intentional, and far more human.
The brands and creators who will win in 2026 are the ones building trust early, choosing the right platforms and partners, and focusing on content that actually connects. Not everything needs to be perfect. It just needs to be real.
As always, we’re keeping a close eye on what’s changing and what actually matters, so you don’t have to. If you want help applying any of this to your brand, content, or creator strategy, you know where to find us 💫
Until next time,
The Mosh Crew
