Social Media News / September 2026

Hey buddy,

With a new month comes new tools to play with 👀

This September, we’re diving into what’s new, shining a light on some Kiwi content worth checking out, and taking you behind the scenes at Mosh.

All the Latest Updates

Meta

Meta has launched Meta One, a new subscription service across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Meta AI, with extra features and increased access to AI tools.

For businesses and creators, there are four tiers: Essential, Advanced, Expert and Max. Business and creator plans start at US$14.99 a month, with the higher tiers adding features such as advanced scheduling, links in organic posts and Reels, exportable analytics, deeper audience insights and team access without sharing passwords.

The standard Meta experience is still free, so this isn’t a case of needing a subscription to keep posting. It’s more about how much extra functionality you want access to if you’re using Meta platforms professionally.

Instagram

Instagram has made a small but handy change to the profile grid You can now add posts you’ve been tagged in directly to your main profile, rather than leaving them sitting in your Tagged tab. The option can be accessed from the tagged post, your DM notification or the Tagged tab itself.

The feature is now available in New Zealand, so have a look to see if it’s landed on your account. Press and hold a post in your Tagged posts grid, select ‘Add to grid’, and it’ll appear on your main grid in chronological order.

For brands, it gives user-generated content and collaborations another way to appear on your profile without having to repost the original content. And for anyone who takes their grid seriously, there’s now another way to curate what makes the cut.

TikTok

TikTok has added four new ways to interact in the comments: Voice Comments, Comment Polls, Photo Carousel Comments and Live Photo Comments.

Voice Comments let users leave audio responses of up to 60 seconds, while Comment Polls allow creators to add up to five options for their audience to vote on. Photo Carousel Comments can include up to nine photos, and Live Photo Comments bring a little movement to photo replies.

The updates are rolling out progressively, so you might not see all four on your account just yet. Comment Polls and Live Photo Comments are already available globally, while Voice Comments and Photo Carousel Comments are being rolled out over the coming weeks. Voice Comments are also limited to users aged 18 and over.

TikTok says more than 1.7 billion comments are shared on the platform every day, so there’s clearly a lot happening below the video. These updates give creators even more ways to turn the comments into part of the content itself.

What If You Could Opt Out of the Algorithm?

Australia has released draft legislation that would give social media users more choice over how their feeds are presented.

The proposed Digital Duty of Care includes an initiative called My Feed, My Way. Under the draft, Australians aged 16 and over would be offered a choice between a personalised feed that uses algorithmic recommendations and a feed made up of content from accounts they choose to follow. The government has said it plans to introduce the legislation in October, so this has moved well beyond an early idea, but it still needs to go through Parliament before it becomes law. Platforms that fail to meet the proposed Digital Duty of Care could face penalties of up to A$109.2 million.

For brands, the interesting part is what this could mean for discovery. If users can choose to step away from personalised recommendations, having a strong reason for people to follow your account becomes even more important.

For now, though, it’s a proposal rather than a new rule, so platforms don’t need to make changes under it yet.

We’ll be keeping an eye on where it goes next 👀

Kiwi Creators We’re Watching

We wanted to shine a little light on some of the creators popping up right here in our home country. There are plenty of creators out there, but we wanted to highlight some Kiwis who are challenging the norm and finding their own niches.

Here are a few we think are worth checking out:

@dailyrejection

Herman Jagpal is a Hamiltonian creator who first caught people’s attention with his 365 Days of Rejection challenge, where he set out to get rejected every day. Now, he’s taking on a new challenge: trading a paperclip all the way to a house 📎🏠

Two very different ideas, both very bingeable. His paperclip-to-house series is well worth catching up on, and he’s getting closer!

@kosmos_nz

Kosmos is a Kiwi creator known for his local vlogs, street-style content and, most importantly, his love of a good pie 🥧

His PieMap.NZ series sees him travelling around New Zealand trying mince and cheese pies, reviewing them and building a map of the spots worth knowing about.

@unklephillzfit

Phill Tutunoa is an Auckland dad documenting his fitness journey, with a rather clever twist on the usual follower milestone. 🏃‍♂️

He’s pledged to run one metre for every follower he gains, turning his growing audience into part of the challenge itself.

@alicetayloreats

Alice Taylor is a Kiwi food creator, pastry chef, writer and cookbook author who first made her mark on MasterChef New Zealand, finishing third in 2022 🍰

Her Cheap & Realistic Eats content focuses on affordable, achievable recipes, showing that good food doesn’t need a fancy ingredient list or a massive budget.

On Set with Lee Kum Kee and Sam Low

This month, we were back in the studio. This time with Sam Low and @leekumkeenz, creating content for a campaign to showcase their new Stir Fry Sauce range.

As part of the campaign, we brought the shoot together to put Lee Kum Kee’s new Stir Fry Sauce range front and centre, showing off what the sauces can do with the help of Sam Low’s chef touch. All together, showing just how easy it is to cook something delicious in 10 minutes or less 😋

If you’re interested to see how it turned out, check it out over on their socials 👀

And that’s a wrap on September 👋 We’ll be back next month with more things to try, watch and talk about. Until then, happy scrolling 👀
