Hey there, welcome to 2023!

Sun’s out, guns out, are we right?! Oh… maybe it’s been more like, rain’s out, no gains out? We’ll workshop that one. Enough with the weather waffle, let’s get into what you’re really here for; The first Mosh Newsletter of the year!

In this edition, we explore the importance of finding the right influencers through some recent client work. TikTok’s also here to stop you from falling asleep while using their app (how benevolent of them), YouTube adding hashtags to Shorts, and the latest on TikTok’s spy drama!

Golden Sun Influencers

Case Study – Influencers / Golden Sun Activation Case Study

Not all influencers are created equal, and finding the right one for your brand can be daunting to say the least. The right influencer can help expand your horizons on social media, reaching the right audience, with the right content, at the right time.

Our friends at Golden Sun accepted the challenge, and we got to work finding the right fit for their influencer strategy. If you are thinking about diversifying your content strategy to include influencers, you’ll probably want to read our Golden Sun case study here.

TikTok Test Sleep Reminders Feature

Are you even a TikTok user if you haven’t fallen asleep in bed, only to be woken with the sharp pain of your phone falling on your face? We’ve all done it. That never-ending scroll somehow affects the time/space continuum and we find ourselves in bed at 1 am watching the Duo Lingo Bird twerking and throwing shade at runway models.

It’s no wonder TikTok is testing additional tools that are designed to help users control their usage of the app. A group of global users is currently testing out new sleep reminders that allow the set up of bedtime alerts and muting notifications during a 7-hour sleep period. This comes after the company launched an in-app tool in June that allows users to schedule regular screen-time breaks, giving users greater control over their TikTok sessions.

The company has expressed its commitment to continuously work on new ways to support its user’s well-being but, as with any other test feature, it’s not known when or if TikTok plans an official rollout of the sleep reminders feature. While we wait to find out, we’ll just be over here watching Gordon Ramsey roasting his followers’ dinner plates…

YouTube Experiments with Suggested Hashtags for Shorts

Help with choosing the right hashtags for your YouTube Shorts content could be coming soon! YouTube has announced that a select group of US shorts creators is testing a new feature that will suggest relevant hashtags to add to their clips at the time of upload.

The suggestions aren’t AI-based but based on the channel’s previously published content. This could be super useful for creators with that hashtag/writer’s block, by guiding them away from generic, overused tags, to ones that are more targeted. Helping the algorithm place more relevant content in front of users who are likely to engage, and creators to gain more traction on their Shorts.

TikTok Faces US Ban After Spy Drama

Straight outta the pages of a spy novel or just US congress, comes the news that TikTok is on shaky ground in the land of stars & stripes. It is claimed that staff from TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, accessed information on several US journalists, obtaining commercially sensitive information.

The claims show a significant violation of user privacy and directly contradict TikTok’s claim that Chinese staff has limited access to US user information.

An ongoing investigation over its potential linkage to the CCP (which requires all Chinese-owned businesses to share user data with the Chinese government on request) could see the platform banned in the US.

For now, TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas is involved in ongoing work with both Oracle and the US government to establish new systems and control parameters, hoping to alleviate concerns around the app being used as a data-gathering tool by the Chinese Government.

Could this spell the end of TikTok in the US or a push to a full sell-off into US ownership? If so, how will other western nations respond? We have our eyes glued to our screens and our hands in the popcorn bowl…
